In 2008, Congress decided to launch the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) within the farm bill. The organization is tasked with improving the economy in the most distressed areas of northern Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and New York.
Today the NBRC announced it has approved two projects in Northern Maine.
“These investments come at an important time,” said Maine Congressman Mike Michaud, who helped craft the NBRC into the legislation. “These projects will have a positive impact on business development in the region and will help spur job creation and additional investments in our state.”
Here is the description of the projects from Rep. Michaud:
$200,000
Town of Van Buren
Funding will go toward the construction of an agricultural building that will serve as a vegetable processing plant for lease to Northern Girl LLC , who will supply products to Crown of Maine cooperative for distribution. This plant will assist in the diversification of local agriculture and expand markets for local producers.
$50,000
Northern Maine Finance Corporation - Caribou, Maine
Funding will be used to establish a public-private partnership to link entrepreneurs with investors and additional support to grow businesses and jobs in Aroostook and Washington Counties. This program will identify potential entrepreneurs and provide them with the necessary training and education to improve their chances for success. This project will be piloted in Caribou, using NBRC funds, and will be expanded through a combination of private/public support from local communities.
