Should Lewiston/Auburn Have a Bigger Airport?

The Portland International Jetport may get all the glamour with its daily flights to big American cities and the foreign destination of Toronto. It currently has the only regular commercial flights to and from the Greater Portland metropolitan area and it's undergoing a major expansion that will make its tiny terminal look more legit to folks from away.

But there is another airport serving Southern Maine.

Did you even know Lewiston/Auburn had an airport?

The Auburn-Lewiston Municipal Airport is getting a $600,000 grant through the Small Community Air Service Development Program, according to a new announcement by Maine Congressman Mike Michaud. Michaud, a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, had written a letter of support for the airport’s grant application.

"This is fantastic news," Michaud said in a statement. "This investment will help the airport build on the good work already being done there, which will further improve the region’s competitiveness and promote economic development. Investing in our infrastructure is one of the best ways to jumpstart job creation while at the same time providing long-term benefits for the community."

Commercial airlines left L/A in 1989 due to changing government priorities for its aviation subsidies. These days, the airport only accommodates corporate, charter, cargo, and recreational aviation. Its two runways are only 5,001 x 100 feet and 2,750 x 75 feet each, making them the shortest and narrowest landing facilities in the area. For comparison's sake, Portland's main runway is over 7,000 feet. L/A's airport barely has over 100 parking spaces, while Portland has thousands of parking slots for visitors.

Yet those who support the expansion of L/A's airport argue that the Cities of the Androscoggin are the axis of a growing inland transit hub. And the region is a population center too, with over 65% of the state's population living and working within 30 miles of the main runway in Auburn. Nevertheless, the L/A airport master plan does not call for turning the airport into a Portland rival. Instead, it focuses on supporting the airport's ongoing activities by improving its facilities.
