NOAA to Launch Online Monitoring of Northeastern Fishermen

Starting May 1, fisherman in the Northeast's groundfish sector will have their catches monitored in near real-time by an online data portal that's run by the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“All of these innovations will make it easier for fishermen to run their business and demonstrate compliance with regulations," said Patricia Kurkul, northeast regional administrator for NOAA’s Fisheries Service. "At the same time, we will be able to gather the information needed to effectively monitor the catch rates set to protect and restore groundfish stocks.”

NOAA also launched "Fish-on-Line," a password ....

Barnes & Noble's Nook Is Actually a Winner

I like to write about other things other than real estate at times because face it, there are other things going on in the world other than real estate.

That being said, today I wanted to write about technology. I absolutely love technology and thus when a new gadget comes out, I just have to get it. So, it shouldn't surprise anyone who knows me that when Barnes & Noble announced their new addition, Nook which is an e-reader, I wanted it.

Demand was much higher than I guess Barnes & Noble had expected and the release date which was originally scheduled for the end of November was pushed off to January 2010. Naturally, I was hugely dis....

I'm On A Ca-Boat

Humans have traveled by boats, planes, trains and automobiles. In March, The Exception Magazine reported that the first flying car was manufactured in Maine. KATU.com recently reported that Steve Johnson, a Long Island, Maine resident has invented a vehicle that is half car, half boat.

With a circular saw, he cut off the boat's hull at the waterline, built a fiberglass deck, and chained the car — complete with well-worn tires and a convertible top that goes up a....

Chicago on the Potomac

Back in the Dream Time, elders were honored because of their accumulated knowledge. If Pops knew a better way to saddle horses, that knowledge helped Junior since he saddled horses. Today if Pops knows how to tune-up cars, what good is that when cars don’t need to be tuned-up anymore?

Now the old are relegated to extolling their own relevance while exclaiming, “I’ve never seen that before.” Doddering ancients who use their cell phones merely to talk wonder why their grandchildren never answer their emails as Gen Z tweet each other: “Don’t trust anyone over 15.” The world is moving so fast not only is today tomorrow’....

Virtually Connected

A week ago, I went to visit a longtime friend out-of-state. While I was pleased to catch up with my friend after a long time apart and while I enjoyed the movie we saw, I was dismayed at my friend’s behavior. Now, my friend didn’t say anything wrong to insult me; the problem was that my friend said very little at all. From the time I got there until the time I left, my friend had her cell phone on her every moment. Texting, texting, texting – at dinner, while she was driving us to the theater, in the theater, on the ride home, and while I was talking to her. Hello, are you listening to me? I’m glad I drove out-of-state to watch your....
