Mainers Can Drive 75

New laws for motorists go into effect today in Maine.

It's now illegal to text while driving and violators face a $100 fine. Maine is the 33rd state with a texting-while-driving ban on the books.

Another law which starts today (although Maine's Department of Transportation is still working on changing the speed limit signs) allows Mainers to drive up to 75 miles per hour on the 110-mile stretch of I-95 from Old Town to Houlton. That region of Eastern Maine has a population density similar to sparse Western states, which tend to allow higher speed limits. The highway now has the highest speed limit this side of the Mississippi.
