Votes by Senators Snowe and Collins Help Kagan Win Seat on Supreme Court

Elena Kagan has been confirmed by the United States Senate today and will serve as the 112th justice to the United States Supreme Court.

The final tally was 63-37, with both of Maine's Senators, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins voting in favor of Kagan as expected.

"We asked for Elena Kagan, and today our Senators answered," said Charlotte Warren, Associate Director of the Maine Women's Lobby. "Thanks to the votes of Senator Snowe, Senator Collins, and a handful of their Republican colleagues, Supreme Court history was made today.”

Elena Kagan is only the fourth woman Associate Justice in U.S. history, although now three women serve on the nation's highest court, the most at any point in history.
