Rep. Pingree Introduces Bill to Help Schools Buy Local Food

Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree introduced a bill this week that aims to increase the amount of local, presumably healthier food that is served in public schools.
“Problems like diabetes and childhood obesity are clear signs that we are not doing enough to teach children healthy eating habits. At the same time, small, local farms are disappearing in a system that favors huge producers and highly processed foods,” said Pingree.
Currently, 20 percent of the funds that schools receive from the federal government for free and reduced lunch programs can be used to purchase commodity food stocks from the USDA. This food i....
