Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter has switched parties, joining the Democrats and leaving Maine's two moderate Republicans wondering whether the GOP has gone too far to the right.
The Democrats now have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, although Specter said today his vote was no guarantee.
Senator Olympia Snowe characterized Specter's move as "devastating" both "personally and I think for the party."
