Maine: New England's Poorest State

The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston has released its quarterly report which shows how Maine and the other New England states fared economically in 2008.
Every state saw increases in unemployment, with the region cutting 144,000 jobs.
Maine lost 15,400 jobs in 2008. That was a 2.5% drop, a higher rate than both New England (2.0 percent lost) and the national average (2.2 percent lost).
Here are some key statistics from the report.

  • Maine saw losses in all major industries except education & health services (up 1.1%) in 2008
  • The state's per capita income ($35,381) was the lowest in New England ....
