L/A Arts, a nonprofit based in Lewiston, is hosting arts classes for the public around the Mexican celebration known as Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead.
On this day in Mexico, people wear skull masks during parades and decorate graves with ornate art to honor loved ones who have passed away.
Classes will be held at the DownStage space at #5 Canal St Alley. Interested attendees should call 782-7228 to reserve a spot and suggested donations for all classes is $5.00.

Suitcase Shrines: October 8th, Saturday, Noon-4pm (Snacks will be provided) (ages 11-adult)
Transform a hard shelled suitcase into a memorable shrine commemorating a passed away loved one, or a poetic expression that joyously celebrates life and your personal connections. Each shrine will be an assemblage sculpture which could include mementos, photographs, clippings, fabric, and other misc. objects. Items will be available to select from other then what you bring. We will supply the suitcases; there will be many sizes and shapes to choose from or bring your own. Get creative and look around!
This special type of art form requires the artist to paint the design on one side of the glass while it will be viewed from the other. Decorate Sugar Skulls.
On a heavy board tri-fold, flat base, each participant will collage a commemorative work that honors a loved one and serves as a visual poem that celebrates the sacred importance of past in order to celebrate the present. The base will be provided, but all are encouraged to bring special two dimensional items to adhere to it. Items could include photographs, clippings, fabrics, flat items that relate to whom you wish to honor. If you do not have personal items supplies will be provided.

Nichos –October 28, Friday 6pm-9pm (Snacks will be provided) (ages 11-adult)
Nichos are small shadow boxes that depict loved ones who have died as skeletons doing activities from everyday life. Bring photos and ideas, and we will supply art materials.
