Alex Matthiessen, President of the environmental advocacy group RiverKeeper, claims in this clip that the environmental movement is "suffering" because it is "dominated by upper-middle class White folks."
Matthiessen argues this is "unsustainable" because greens are not reaching out to those in urban or low-income areas who are actually harmed by environmental degradation in their daily lives. He suggests that the "elitist Treehugger tag," which opponents of the green movement use, is unfortunate but understandable because the current environmentalist movement doesn't have a broad appeal.
