The Joys of Hitchhiking in Africa

The price agreed upon with the driver amounted to a fee of about ten dollars each, not bad for the journey we were about to undertake and quite a bounty for the driver, as well. In Kenya, the driver is agreed upon before the price, and shortly after approaching the convoy with our intentions we had been pointed in the direction of a driver that could accommodate four westerners. Every morning at around 8:00 AM, a dozen or so vehicles cast off from the sparse Kenyan border town of Moyale and head towards Nairobi on the inappropriately labeled East African National Highway. The few westerner tourists coming south from Ethiopia usually hitch ....
