Maine Receiving $2 Million in Federal Red Tide Disaster Aid
Maine will receive $2 million in federal disaster aid to help its shellfish industry recover from the 2008 red tide, an algal bloom outbreak that makes shellfish inedible for humans.
The funds were approved by NOAA and will go to state plans that support efforts to contain the damage during future outbreaks. Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts will also collaborate on red tide research and produce educational materials that inform the public about the risks of red tide.
