Maine House Passes Same-Sex Marriage Bill

The Maine legislature has passed LD 1020, a bill which would allow any two adults to marry in the eyes of the state, regardless of gender. Governor John Baldacci, who opposed gay marriage in the past, is keeping an "open mind" on the issue and will likely sign the bill into law.
The state House voted today 89 to 58 in favor of bill after the Senate approved the measure by a 21 to 14 vote last week.
The Maine Family Policy Council, a group which opposes gay marriage, has vowed to overturn the bill by a public referendum.
