Make Mine Moxie!
This week we took our local TV show to Union, Maine to investigate the Moxie Museum, a part of the Mathews museum complex. My interest was sparked mainly by curiosity to find out why anyone would go to so much effort to recognize so obscure a product, albeit a unique piece of Maine heritage. But that’s my cynical side. I’m glad they did. I like drinking Moxie, even if the first sip tastes, according to our director Art Mayers, like motor oil. (How would he know?)
Moxie was invented by a Union native, Dr. Augustin Thompson who patented the product in 1876 as “Moxie Nerve Food.” It was marketed from Lowell, MA, as medici....
